| Description: | In 1980, Princeville Airways (now Island Air) was incorporated by Colorado-based Consolidated Oil and Gas (COG) as a subsidiary of COG, and began scheduled service between Honolulu and Princeville with two Twin Otter DASH-6 aircraft. While service was extended over the next 7 years to other smaller community destinations on other islands, Princeville Airways' main function was to transport passengers to and from the Princeville Resort on Kauai. Early 1987, Princeville's fleet had grown to eight Twin Otters. In May 1987, Princeville Airways was purchased by Aloha AirGroup, the parent company of Aloha Airlines, and renamed Aloha IslandAir, Inc. To meet the growing demand for air service to Hawaii's commuter and resort destinations, two more aircraft were added to the fleet and more flights to its daily schedule. The following year, the carrier purchased three more Twin Otters, bringing its fleet to nine aircraft. In 1992, the company applied to register "Island Air" as its trade name, giving it a distinct identification. Aloha IslandAir remains its corporate name, doing business as Island Air. In 1995, Island Air applied to the FAA for certification under Part 121, which allows it to operate larger aircraft to meet the demands in the markets it currently serves. In April of that same year, Island Air took possession of its first 37-seat de Havilland DASH-8 aircraft, ushering in a new era of air service for the carrier. Island Air's fleet currently consists of 37-seat de Havilland DASH-8 aircraft. With approximately 50 daily flights, Island Air is Hawaii's leading commuter carrier, serving Hawaii's community and premiere resort destinations. |
