Description:	For over 150 years, Theo. H. Davies & Co., Ltd., ("TheoDavies") has played a vital role in the commercial history of Hawaii and the Pacific. From a simple island trading company, TheoDavies has grown into a modern diversified corporation that is part of a major international enterprise. The company traces its beginning back to 1845 when the firm of Starkey, Janion & Co. was formed in Honolulu. Twelve years later, Theophilus Harris Davies - just 23 years of age - left Britain and joined the firm. By 1868, he acquired 100% ownership of the business that now carries his name, and in 1884 the company was incorporated as Theo. H. Davies & Co., Ltd. From its trading base, the company moved into insurance, transportation and other businesses. Mr. Davies became a pioneer of the Hawaiian sugar industry, a business that the company would later expand to the Philippines. Through much of the first half of the 1900's, the company was one of the foremost merchandisers in the Hawaiian Islands. TheoDavies was known as one of the Big Five - the largest established business houses in Hawaii. In 1973, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited, a large British trading company with its head office in Hong Kong and significant operations worldwide. Today, the company employs over 2500 people engaged in a wide range of activities, including industrial equipment distribution, automobiles and food service.
